Advice when visiting

You are a guest of nature when visiting Østmarka. The right of public access allows us to move freely, but you are obliged to act considerately so that animals and plants are not harmed or disturbed. Leave nature as you would like to find it yourself.

Welcome to hiking in Østmarka – respect nature

The Right to Roam (Allemannsretten) allows you to go wherever you like on foot or skis.

  • You may pick berries and edible mushrooms for personal use throughout Østmarka.
  • All vegetation is protected within the national park and recreation area.

Cycling (including e-bikes) and horseback riding in the national park and recreation area is allowed on trails, roads, and frozen lakes. In Zone A, cycling and riding are not allowed. See an overview map of Østmarka National Park with Zone A (PDF)

Drones can disturb wildlife and other park users, and are therefore not allowed without a special permit.

Resting and camping: You are welcome to rest and camp in the wilderness, with some exceptions. Otherwise, the general rule (Outdoor Recreation Act) allows you to camp or sleep in a hammock for up to two nights without the landowner’s permission, at least 150 meters from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. Designated campsites and specific rules apply for longer stays at the Tourist Association’s cabins.

Campfires: Feel free to use your own firewood. It is allowed to use small twigs from trees, but preferably twigs found on the ground. Remember that there is a ban on open fires from April 15 to September 15. It is still allowed to light a fire where it is clear that the flames cannot spread. Do not make new fire rings—use the ones that already exist. Do not light a fire directly on rock, as it cracks and leaves permanent marks.

Trash must not be left in the national park or burned; it must be carried out and disposed of properly. Feel free to pick up trash you find along your way.

Toileting: Dig a hole at least 15 cm deep and cover it afterward. If you’re not comfortable using moss, use biodegradable paper or take the paper with you. Wet wipes and sanitary pads do not decompose and must never be left behind.

Fishing, picking, and foraging: Picking berries and mushrooms for personal use is allowed. The same applies to picking common flowers.
