The Right to Roam – Rights and Responsibilities

The right to roam (Allemannsretten) gives us the freedom to travel and stay in uncultivated areas in Norway. This right is a free common good and part of Norway’s cultural heritage. It applies regardless of who owns the land.

The right to roam forms the basis for outdoor recreation in Norway. It grants the right to freely travel on foot or skis in uncultivated areas. The main rules regarding the right to roam are set out in the Outdoor Recreation Act.

Uncultivated land includes most lakes, shores, mires, forests, and mountains in Norway.

The right to roam applies to everyone and includes the right to stay (e.g., camping, swimming, and resting), travel, and gather resources. Use of this right is free of charge.

Staying, traveling, and gathering must be done respectfully. You must consider others enjoying nature, residents, cabin owners, and farmers who rely on natural resources for their livelihood.

Whether traveling on cultivated or uncultivated land, always close gates behind you and show consideration for animals grazing in the area.

Read more about the right to roam in this PDF brochure.

Welcome to Østmarka – Respect Nature

Remember that you are a guest of nature when visiting our national parks. The first rule is to show respect for all life around you – including other people.

A national park in Østmarka is the first in a lowland forest area in Eastern Norway. Protecting large, contiguous forest areas is important for conserving species and forest habitats over the long term. At the same time, Østmarka will continue to be an important area for sports and outdoor activities.

The national park was opened on 25.05.24.

We can never replace our natural heritage – we can only take care of it!
